Mission-Driven Speaking
Why This Matters
Some of the most enduring speeches were never given for personal advancement at all — they were given in service of something larger than the speaker. If your Level 3 speech is in service of a cause, an institution, or a community, that purpose needs to be legible on the page, not just felt by you privately.
This Week's Exercise
Write one sentence naming the larger mission or community this speech actually serves — beyond your own goals in giving it.
Check whether that mission is visible in the speech itself, or only in your own head. An audience can't act on a purpose they were never told.
Find a moment to speak directly to the people the mission is meant to serve, not just about them — the difference is felt immediately by any real audience.
Make sure your call to action serves the mission, not just the moment — what should someone do after this speech to actually advance the cause?
Coach's Note — Sojourner Truth: Truth doesn't wear itself out with elaborate technique — it speaks plainly, for the people it serves, and lets that plainness carry the weight. A mission-driven speech doesn't need to be the most polished in the room. It needs to be the most honest.
